Foundry sand is divided into silica sand and non-siliceous sand according to different mineral compositions.
Foundry sand is divided into silica sand and non-siliceous sand according to different mineral compositions. The following is introduced by OBT:

First, silicon foundry sand

The main mineral composition is silica:

(1) Natural silica sand

Used for molding sand and core sand of non-ferrous alloy castings, cast iron and small and medium-sized steel castings.

(2) Selected natural silicon foundry sand

It is used for all kinds of molding sand and core sand with organic matter as the binder.

(3) Artificial silica sand

Sand and core sand for steel castings.

Second, non-silicon foundry sand

There are many types of non-siliceous sand and their uses are different.

(1) Limestone sand

Broken from limestone, the main mineral composition is CaCO3, which is used for molding sand and core sand of steel castings.

(2) Zircon sand

The main mineral composition is ZrO2 · SiO2, which is used for core sand or surface sand of large-scale cast steel and alloy steel parts, or its mullite powder is used as coating.

(3) Magnesite

The main mineral composition is MgO, which is used for face sand and core sand of high manganese steel castings, and its mullite powder can be used as coating.

(4) Chromite Ore

The main mineral composition is chromite FeO · Cr2O3, which is used for the surface sand and core sand of large or special steel castings. Its mullite powder can be used as coating.

(5) Corundum sand

The main mineral composition is corundum α-Al2O3, which is used as a shell material for investment molds and ceramic foundry sands.

(6) Peridot casting sand

The main mineral composition is olivine (MgFe) 2SiO4, which is used for molding sand and core sand of cast iron, non-ferrous alloy castings and high manganese steel castings.
